Jennifer & Brendan's Assembly Yard Wedding
THE DRESS I loved wedding dress shopping, but I went in with no idea what I wanted. I tried so many different style dresses on and this helped me narrow down all things I didn’t want. When I came into Samantha Wynne, Samantha helped me by picking out a selection of dresses which I appreciated. I was drawn to the subtle details of my dress which I think make it beautiful and a little different.
CAN YOU REMEMBER THE MOMENT YOU KNEW IT WAS THE DRESS? I had tried many dresses by this stage but nothing like the dress I chose. I was surprised by how much I liked the dress on me and I didn’t really want to take it off haha. It was different, classy and fit me perfectly. But I didn’t say yes right away. I tried on a few more dresses that afternoon and went away to think about it. But I knew deep down I had found my dress. I went back next week, retried it and said YES.
HOW DID YOU FIRST MEET? We first met on a night out when I bumped into a mutual friend, actually Brendan’s best man, and he introduced me to Brendan. I was instantly attracted to this tall, dark, handsome stranger. We chatted and danced throughout the night but parted ways and nothing came from that. Until the following year we bumped into each other again, at another bar haha, and this time exchanged numbers. A week later we started dating and that was about 7 years ago now. Turns out we both fancied each other from the first night we met.
THE PROPOSAL We got engaged in Karijini National Park in 2020 whilst we were on a road trip around WA. We spent the morning hiking and then checked into eco retreat where a very nervous Brendan proposed to me during a quiet moment together on the balcony. It was a perfect moment for us and having no reception for the next few days we really soaked it up.
FAVOURITE MOMENT I loved the ceremony. Both Brendan and I usually shy away from being the centre of attention, but standing up in front of our favourite people with Brendan was very special. Our celebrant, Brooke (Married by Brooke) did an incredible job of making the ceremony fun, engaging and relaxed – exactly how we wanted it to be. Just before the end of the ceremony we did a tequila shot with all our guests.
THE VENUE We wanted a BYO/DIY venue, a blank canvas that we could pick and choose all our vendors and the food and drinks we wanted to serve. We stumbled upon Assembly Yard in Fremantle and it ticked all of the boxes, beautiful garden for an outside ceremony and inside warehouse style space to party in. We had foodtrucks, a pop up bar and an acoustic singer which brought our mini festival wedding inspiration to life. The staff at Assembly Yard were extremely helpful and considerate that it made planning and the day run smoothly.
FAVOURITE DETAILS It was only on the day that I got to see all the girls together in their dresses and with the flowers, I am so happy with how it worked out. The girls chose their own dresses so they could pick something they loved and felt comfortable in. I had told the florist that the girls were wearing blue and that I wanted some peachy, orange tones to contrast. The girls and florist, A Little Bohemia, absolutely nailed it!
ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES Do you! Get a clear idea of what you want at the beginning of planning, even before you start planning. Knowing what you want and cut out what you don’t want. We didn’t bother with a cake, and opted cookies from Get Chunky as our dessert instead. These went down a treat with our guests! We also didn’t exchange vows during our ceremony and opted to do this privately afterwards which was special for us. It’s easy to get carried away during the planning process and this can lead to budgets being blown. Be organised in advance so you can give yourselves time in the lead up to the wedding date to relax and enjoy the ride!
Also knowing who your support network is and surrounding yourselves with these people. We had so much fun with our bridal party on the day and in the lead up to the wedding, memories we will cherish forever.
BEST WEDDING SPEND Our photographer, Alex Cohen! We gave ourselves a generous portion of our budget for photography, as we knew from the beginning videographer wasn’t for us. When we started planning I already had Alex in mind. We did shop around at first but kept coming back to Alex, so we knew it was the right decision. The day we got our photos back I couldn’t believe how beautiful they turned out and how perfectly our day was captured. We are both so happy we have these to always look back on.
We are also happy we spent the money we did on food, drinks and music. Our vendors kept our guests happily eating, drinking and dancing all night. Basically the soul of a wedding.
